[interior] door pulls

I can't believe that (a) I haven't seen this question asked in the year or
so that I've been here, and/or (b) that I didn't think to ask it myself,
plagued as I have been with this problem.

I'm talking about my right door interior handle (this may happen on the
left, too, but I've yet to see it); occasionally, when pulled hard, it pops
out of its top mounting hole, tearing a nice gash in the door panel as it
exits. Unscrewing the bottom, reinserting the top, and reattaching the
bottom makes it feel all nice and solid again, but it eventually reoccurs.
It seems to me that if the piece that projects into the hole in the door
were a little longer, or if the handle itself were a tad less flexible, this
wouldn't happen. This has happened on both of my '82s, and a friend's '83.

Anyone got a fix? For that matter, assuming I can make this stop, any
recommendations on repairing the damage to the door panel?

Thanks, all....
Jeff
