Re: Rough shifting advice?

David, almost all shifter "notchyness" stems from a repair or re-alignment of the
shift linkage or motor, i.e. clutch replacement, short shift, engine swap, bushing
replacement or motor mount change. First, identify if you need new shifter
bushings. I recommend the later A3 style white nylon relay rod bushings over the
soft urethane ones which are standard. Sometimes just replacing bushings can bring
the shifter mechanism into alignment. After this, the Bentlely manual for your car
gives a complete adjustment proceedure. This basically involves the loosening of
an easily accesible clamp and the turning of a knurled shifter rod shaft one knurl
to the left or right. Remember this when you go to buy your next car that has a
"bad tranny" and the owner is selling it cheap! For more shifter bushing info,
check the "tuning" section of my website.
