I would look very critically at the outer CV joint. They don't take kindly
to this sort of treatment...

Were there any warning symptoms for the ball joint? My '83 had lousy worn
joints, but I only saw it when making a hard turn - there would be a small
bump in the steering as the ball shifted in the socket. I really discovered
the problem while looking at the suspension with weight off the wheels.
