Mostly, wire is wire. The size (gauge) of the wire is the important thing.

(One important point - don't use SOLID wire for anything on a car. It will
break if flexed.)

It's a good idea to use the same size (or larger) and the same colors as
stock, so as to make things easier when you have to troubleshoot later.
Bigger wires will run cooler than the stock. Don't get carried away - the
wires should fit on the terminals!

The heavy wire from the alternator output to the battery is where a larger
gauge will help by reducing the voltage drop. Same for the ground strap from
the alternator housing to the engine block. Small wires, like the charge
indicator lead, are not critical for size. Just don't ever go SMALLER.

If you use crimp-on terminals, make sure they are crimped properly. A loose
teminal can overheat and cause untold grief. Soldered terminals are much better.
