NOS article from 1988 VW&P

Given all this interest in NOS installs, especially on 16v's, I dug through
my EC/VW&P collection to find this nugget.

This is a small portion of the 'Gas Attack' article on page 62 of the
Dec. 88 VW & Porche. Typos are my own.

-------
The art and science of incorporating nitrious oxide injection has
evolved over the years from a backyard conversion (with usually damaging
results), to a carefully planned system using intricately machined metering
orifices and a system of electronically controlled solenoids for precise fuel
delivery. The once 'black art' of nitrious on home-built contraptions with
expolsive engines, became the sophisticated application of systems for both
competitive racing and everyday street vehicles.
Autotech Sport Tuning in conjunction with Nitrious Oxide Systems has
come up with a clean horsepower boosting system for the 16v VW performance
engines. The kit concentrates on supplying equal amounts of nitrous and
extra gas to each cylinder. The long intake runners on the 16v engine
configuration (designed to replace low-end torque loss due to the low intake
port velocities inherent on four-valve per cylinder designs) do not allow
for the usual single nitrous fogger nozzle to be mounted at the throttle
body. The distance the single nozzle would be from the valves creates a
condition where the nitrous and fuel mixture searches for the path of least
resistance. Thus, the intake runners closer to the throttle body will get
more nitrious than the farthest ones. Another factor to consider is that the
'fogger' nozzle (designed to create an aspirated mixture of gas & nitrous
for better combustion) will have trouble maintaining the aspirated mixture
due to travelling a lengthy and convoluted path. The gas can become
separated and pool down an intake runner causing an imbalance and possible
lean detonation in the nitrous rich cylinder.
A machined aluminum injector plate, manufactured by Autotech, in-
stalls at the break-point in the two piece intake manifold. The long manifold
from the VW factory has the break-point so that valvetrain servicing is made
easy. The Autotech nitrous injector plate is at a point approximately five
inches from the cylinderhead, providing a direct injection of aspirated gas
and nitrous oxide into the combustion chambers. Longer studs are supplied
with the kit to allow for the plate to be added without complications. The
addition of the plate also moves the upper plenum chamber toward the rear
of the vehicle slightly, necessitation new support brackets with replace
the factory pieces essential for preventing manifold cracking.

Great system. Buy it. We liked it. 16v engine is a great candidate for this.

Nitrous runs took almost 3 seconds off 0-60 runs, but was hampered by less
then optimal rubber on the car.

Blah - blah - blah. I don't feel like typing anymore of this, it's a fairly
indepth and long article. If I get enough response, I'll scan the
whole thing and make it available.
