Most if not all '79 Rabbits (first year of US-built) came with a cruel
joke inside. The block is the standard 1.6 block, but the crank is a
short stroke piece of $#!+. The "emissions 1.5" displacement was
slightly less than 1500, but not the same as the '75-'76 1.5. This motor
also ended up in some early '80 Rabbits.

My $0.01,
My '78 Scirocco came with a 1.6 block, destroked to 1457cc(gas shortage
years). All other Sciroccos for '78 were the same displacement. Yeah, this
engine had a cast crank, they tell me. I do remember it was a high reving
engine. In '79 Rabbits they used the same engine that they used in my '78
Scirocco(1457cc) and the '79 Scirocco came with a 1588cc as well as a
5-speed. I still have my 1457cc sitting in my garage.
