Min. Oktan?

I noticed a sticker on the doorjam of my '81 that reads:

        Oktan min. 91ROZ/RON

Does this mean that my car requires premium?!  Is the 91ROZ/RON the same
scale as the RMS or whatever method used for calculating octane?  I can't
believe that with a 8.0 or 8.5:1 engine that I need premium.  Is this why
I've been losing stoplight showdowns to Vipers?  TIA, TIA, benton-------
