wheel hub

   If a front wheel bearing gets totally trashed, is it possible for it to
ruin the hub.  My local mechanic said the race on the hub was ruined, but
to my knowledge, the inner race is on the bearing, so no moving part
contacts the actually hub piece.  Am I completely wrong or he he taking me
for a ride.  Luckily I have a spare hub so I dont have to fork out the 116
bucks for a new one.
