Re: Transmision wowes!

<< I have a '87 16v, I have only owned it since March of this year but
the previous owner has run Amsoil in it for over 4 years. I have noticed
my transmision wet with fluid, and sometimes it will leave a small spot of
tranny fluid on the ground. I feel it is getting a little low because of
some shifting trouble (no sounds yet!) But when I went to check the fluid
I was surprised to notice that the drain/check plug takes what looks to be
a 3/4" Allan wrench. After consulting a few local parts stores I learned
that they are all idiots and cant help me!
Is this the right plug I am looking at?
Where can I get such a tool?
Or am I just as stupid as the guy at AutoZone?
The following quote should sum up my experience with parts guys.
"5 speed... hmmm.. is that manual or automatic?"
 Thanks.

Brandon, My experience is as follows:
I took my car to my trusted mechanics in Buffalo NY when I lived there and
told them my differential seals were leaking and I was worried I was gonna
hurt my tranny. They said, no, your speedo cable is squirting fluid down
onto your CV joint and then the fluid is splashing all over. I trusted them.
They said that it wasn't much fluid coming out so they topped it off and
sent me on my way. A couple weeks later my car got to go on an extended
vacation in my parents garage for a year and a half while I was looking for a
new transmission. I would suggest that you change your differential seals
very soon. It is a slightly involved job but can be done easily if you have
the right tools. As for the fill plug on the side of the tranny: it is a
17MM and you can buy them at Sears or you can do what I did......get an extra
lug bolt outta the junk yard or something and clamp vice grips on it and use
it. It works perfect. I'd say that since you have shifting problems you
should do this as soon as possible. You might want to replace the mainshaft
seal as well......more work but I'd advise it. I know a lot of us on this
list have become transmission specialists so if you have any furthur
questions please ask. good luck
