Bouncing Tachs Cure?

Anyone who's tach is bouncing around might be interested in this
message:

My car was exhibiting these problems before they were traced to a bad
ignition switch:
Tach would suddenly drop to zero and back to normal (highway speeds,
slow speeds, you name it.)
The car would sometimes start, but stop as soon as I released the key.
It would take many trys to get it started.
It eventually would cut off altogether at random times.
Ultimately, it cut out on the highway and wouldn't start at all.

The tach dropping instantly indicates that the ignition is cutting out.
While it could be some other type of electrical problem, I would check
the ignition switch before hunting down loose wires.

When the car is running, try slightly turning the key back towards the
off position. If you have a worn switch, it will probably have a "hair
trigger" effect and the car should cut out. In the case of my car, the
weight of my other keys swinging around was enough to make the car cut
out.

Fixing the switch yourself is kind of a pain but do-able. It's not too
expensive at a shop--definitely a lot cheaper than paying them to hunt
down electrical probs.
