It all depends on the parts you choose. 
Wild cam is good for 12HP
completely freeflowing exhaust is good for 10hp.
complete port and polish thats been flow bench tested.... 15hp.

You get more HP when you increase the comp ratio. lets say you have a 90 hp
"JH" motor with 8.5-1 compression.
Shave the head .40 will increase the compression by .7. (9.2-1)
Get the VW motorsports head gasket. it is 1.4mm thick and increases
compression by .7 more. (9.9-1)
Change to the 10-1 pistons and now you will have a complete compression
ratio of 11.4-1. 
Then you should have the +40 gain your looking for. 
now you'll need a knock sensor ect....
