I had something similar happen to an older Scirocco of mine.  The clutch 
cable tore out the bottom of the clutch cable sheathing, releasing all the
tension by effectively lengthening the clutch cable.  The clutch pedal had
NO pressure at all.  I didn't even notice what the problem was right away
becuase it was near the top the firewall and it was the BOTTOM of the cable
that had split open.  I replaced the clutch line from a junked car and
everything was fine.
